PA Media Unit dismisses false news reports
[14 September 2000]

The Media Co-ordinating Unit of the People’s Alliance yesterday dismissed news reports that a mob of about 150 persons had shouted slogans outside the Thalawathugoda residence of Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake on Tuesday.

The reports, published in the Lankadeepa and Daily Mirror, said the Commissioner had informed police stations in the area about the unruly mob. As there was no response from the local police, the Commissioner had informed the Defence Secretary who had instructed the IGP to send a police team to disperse the crowd, the reports said.

The Media Co-ordinating Unit said the news item was “completely fabricated”.

It said the residents had not reported any such incident. It also quoted the Thalangama OIC as saying that he did not receive a complaint from the Commissioner.

“It is clear that newspapers sympathetic towards the UNP are publishing false news items to mislead the people,” the PA Media Unit communique said.
