The
Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake said yesterday that his
staff was fully geared to ensure a clean poll in the face of any obstacle. The
Commissioner noted that he felt his security was under threat during the
past few days as unidentified persons roamed near his house, in
Thalawathugoda in the suburbs of Colombo, but he took steps to seek
protection from the police. The
Election Commissioner in a statement on Monday noted that he ordered the
printing of stickers under powers vested in him to prevent rigging of
elections. He
said he was compelled to act following a complaint made by UNP General
Secretary Gamini Athukorale when the latter produced 81 forged polling
cards similar to the official ballot papers. “Therefore
I decided to introduce a sicker and gave the contract to a reliable
person,” he added. He
further explained that he has taken full responsibility for the printing
of the stickers. The voters will receive their polling cards along with
these stickers after September 18, he further added. Meanwhile
a number of political parties yesterday came out in support of the
Election Commissioner’s position to print secret stickers to ensure a
free and fair election.
