ADB dole scheme to help under-privileged students
[15 September 2000]

A dole scheme started by the Asian Development Bank will help more than 300,000 under-privileged students to pursue secondary education, sources said.

The project with a credit line amounting to US$ 50 million would help modernise secondary schools with modern teaching methods and a novel evaluation system, Education and Higher Education Ministry sources, said.

The project would set up schools in rural areas and introduce career guidance schemes for under-privileged students.

The project would modernise 2300 secondary schools in quality, access, efficiency and management.

The ADB would finance 66 percent of the project at a cost of US$ 76 million, while the Nordic Development Fund, the government and the beneficiaries would fund the balance.

The government has been carrying out various educational reforms for the past four years, developing all levels including primary, secondary and higher education levels. The ADB scheme is one of the many projects carried out to enhance and strengthen education in the country.
