JVP invites all parties to defeat PA attempt for poll rigging
[15 September 2000]

Yesterday Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna threatened to launch a mass campaign if PA attempts to rig the forthcoming election and invited all the parties to join together to defeat such an effort.

The JVP propaganda Secretary, Wimal Weerawansa, stated in a press conference held in Colombo yesterday, "We appeal all political parties to join with us, forgetting past rivalries to protest against mass scale polls rigging."

General Secretary JVP, Tilvin Silva said there was an attempt to rig polls by aiming to remove the Election Commissioner by putting forward the sticker issue.  Mr. Silva thoroughly stated, PA Government had no right to blame the Election Commissioner in using a private press for printing stickers, while using the state media and the government press for their election campaigning.

Mr. Weerawnsa stated, "As general election was more crucial for in maintaining the future credibility of the party and they will do the maximum effort against violence and corruption in the election. "UNP Gampha District Organiser Anura Bandaranaike said in a press conference that they are willing to welcome the invitation to protect the ballot.
