PA best suited to resolve conflict
[19 September 2000]

Forty-one per cent of those who were interviewed during a survey prior to the general elections said that the People's Alliance (PA) is better equipped to come to a settlement with the LTTE as against the main opposition of UNP's nine percent.

The survey was conducted by ORG-MARG-SMART, an India-Dutch-Sri Lankan joint venture, showed that the majority of the Sri Lankan people had confidence that the PA had strong leaders and hence capable of providing a stable government.

The survey, conducted on a sample of 1299 people from August 30 to September 7, showed that 46 per cent of the population identified the north-east conflict as an important national problem.

However, the only time that the UNP was given a better rating was in managing the economy.

Also 40 per cent of them said the quality of life had gone down since PA assumed power in 1994, while 42 per cent said living conditions were no better than they were six years ago. Only 13 per cent said life had become better.
