The new leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, Rauf Hakeem informed President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge that the SLMC would support her as long as she remained in politics, just as it was the intention of the late SLMC leader M H M Ashraff. At a meeting of the Politburo of the SLMC on Sunday night, Farial Ashraff, wife of the deceased Minister Ashraff and Rauff Hakeem were unanimously elected the new joint leaders of the SLMC. At the SLMC Politburo meeting on Sunday it was decided to request the President to nominate Farial Ashraff to fill the vacancy in the candidacy for Digamadulla district created by the death of her husband. It was also unanimously decided to request the President to appoint Rauff Hakeem to the Ministerial vacancy.
