Ferocious battle rages in the north
[19 September 2000]

A deadly battle raged in the North on Monday in the Jaffna Peninsula leaving at least 63 dead on both sides, military sources said.

According to a defence Ministry statement, troops supported by aircraft and artillery attacked from their defence lines and re-captured the town of Chavakachcheri on Sunday after a three-hour battle.

The Army recovered eighteen bodies of Tigers, eight females and ten males who were killed in the Chavakachcheri area on Sunday.

Around 75 bodies of terrorists were found scattered in the area, an army spokesman said. Arrangements will be made to hand over these bodies to the LTTE through the ICRC, an ICRC spokesman said.

Meanwhile, 45 bodies of Tigers have already been handed over to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources said.
