Call for further investigations on helicopter tragedy
[19 September 2000]

The report of the Special Air Force investigation team inquiry into the helicopter crash in Aranayake on Saturday noted that it hit the Urakanda Mountain, which caused the crash.

The report also said that the helicopter might have crashed due to bad weather conditions.

It is claimed that if it exploded in the air, the pieces of the craft should spread all over the area, but in this case it has not happened as such.

Meanwhile, Police and Air Force investigators were unable to recover the ‘Black Box’ of the crashed helicopter. Police said that investigation teams are conducting further investigations in the area to find the Black Box.

Defence Ministry officials stated that the possibility of obtaining foreign assistance to ascertain the causes for the crash is also being considered. Discussions are reportedly on to bring down experts from Ukraine.
