Upholding a petition by a leader of an independent group from the Digamadulla District, the Court of Appeal yesterday ruled that the TULF’s nomination papers fro the district was invalid. The Registrar was directed by Justice J A N de Silva to send a copy of the judgement to the Elections Commissioner, advising him to take necessary action. According to the Judge the Party had acted in contravention of the Parliamentary Elections Act, which required the nomination papers to be signed by the General Secretary of the Party. In this case however, TULF nomination papers had not been signed by its Secretary, R Sambanthan, sources said. The TULF nomination paper was not that of Sambanthan, but of Vasantharasapillai Thayanantharajah, a candidate for the district.
