The Government Agent R. Sanmuganathan said yesterday that more than 300,000 out of 4,18,000 registered voters in the Jaffna would cast their votes in the forthcoming general elections. It was also revealed that out of 468 polling stations in Jaffna 214 were to be located in areas abandoned by the villagers. Action is to be taken to set up eight alternative polling stations in the cleared areas. Mr. Sanmuganathan said that negotiations are being done to provide voters with free transport. Meanwhile, Jaffna Commander Major General Anton Wijendra assured security for the voters in the northern peninsula. "I request everyone in the Jaffna to cast their votes and I will provide security for them outside every polling station," he said.
