Death penalty for 18 year old found guilty of murder

The death penalty was imposed by the Colombo High Court, Trial-at-Bar on 18-year-old Amila Nuwan de Silva who was found guilty of the murder of 8-year-old Sadeepa Lakshan de Silva at Aluthgama last year.

Amila was charged of the three charges of abduction, murder of 8-year-old Sadeepa Lakshan de Silva at Aluthgama on October 8, 1999 and demanding and accepting a ransom of 25 lakhs, from the father of the child.

While the death penalty was imposed for the conviction for murder, a penalty of 5 years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs.5000, in default a rigorous imprisonment term of one year was imposed for the conviction for abduction.

A penalty of four years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs.25, 000 in default a rigorous imprisonment term of two years was imposed for the conviction for ransom. These prison terms will run concurrently.
