Introducing the election manifesto, the Peoples Alliance said if they re-elected to the power in the up coming election they would try to enlist the support of all political parties to form a national government. It would also introduce a new constitution with provisions to abolish the Executive Presidency and devolve power. The manifesto was released at a press conference yesterday presided by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayke. When questioned whether the LTTE would be involved in the forming the National Government, the Premier said that the LTTE would never be invited to join as long as they were committed to terrorism. When questioned whether the old constitution reforms would be re-presented, Prime Minister said that the old constitution reforms had been disposed of with the dissolution of parliament. The new reforms would be enacted with the consensus of the Maha Nayakas, the clergy and all interested parties. The programme also envisages an economy based on the spirit of competition; a new development approach supported by strategy; planning and public involvement; galvanising domestic production as well as catering to the foreign market and a government committed to a dynamic private sector. Addressing the press conference, SLFP General Secretary Minister S. B. Dissanayake said that for the past six years the government formed by the PA had executed it’s plans for the country “within a war situation and yet we have been able to achieve plenty during these years”. “Our vision for the 21st century has reached it’s epochal anniversary, it is formulated by eminent politicians, economic and social scientists, veteran administrators and managers under the leadership of President Chandrika Kumaratunge” Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.
