Ashraff’s position to Hakeem
[25 September 2000]

The decision to appoint Rauf Hakeem, the co leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, as Minister of Ports and Rehabilitation remains unchanged  amidst  opposition  from some of the  party  supporters in Ampara-Batticaloa  area.

According to sources people of the eastern province strongly believe that  SLMC should  appoint an eastern  Muslim to hold the late minister’s  portfolio.  On Friday, demonstrations were held outside the Kalmunai Jumma Mosque after prayer

service,to demonstrate their displeasure over this matter. Furthermore they pledged to launch a fast unto death to persuade the party to take the right measures.

Hakeem was due to take his oaths on Friday. However it was postponed due to questions raised on the legality of the appointment. All obstacles are now cleared out said Hakeem.
