A recent survey conducted by ORG-Marg-SMART poll has revealed that the People’s Alliance (PA) is way ahead of the United National Party (UNP) for the forthcoming general elections on October 10. According to fieldwork conducted in 17 districts outside the North and East war torn areas, it was found that out of 1299 respondents more people felt that the PA was better equipped to provide a stable government, manage the economy, solve the ethnic problem, reduce unemployment and provide leadership. The survey which was conducted between August 30 and September 7 states that 41 percent says the PA could provide a stable government while only 15 percent thought that the UNP could. On the issue of who could solve the ethnic problem, which is the most important national issue at present, 41 percent thought that the PA was better equipped to do so, while only 9 percent was in favour of the UNP. However, with regard to the cost of living, 26 percent thought the UNP could control it while 24 was in favour of the PA. On reducing unemployment, the PA was rated higher scoring 28 percent as against the 23 percent of the UNP. Among the significant findings of the survey around 46 percent felt that the new government “must somehow put an end to this never ending war.” Analysts say the ethnic conflict and war had moved to the foreground in the people’s mind, pushing economic issues back.
