Politicians should refrain from defaming say Mahanayakas
[26 September 2000]

The malicious remarks made by former UNP MP Rajitha Senaratne has been severely condemned by a large section of the society.

He was making fun of the President and her eye injury during a UNP rally at Kotikawatte few days ago.

The Chief Incumbent of the Amarapura Maha Nayaka Most. Ven. Madhihe Pannaseeha Maha Nayaka Thera said that politicians should refrain from defaming each other and dragging personal aspects into the political campaign.

They should work together for the betterment of the country. Unnecessary remarks of a personal nature should not be made on the political platform, he added.

Viharadhipathi of the Kiri vehera Ven. Dr. Aluthgama Soratha Thera said, “Politicians should speak about the problems faced by the people instead of commenting on the personal lives of the President and other leading personalities”.

“President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge is a mother and a national leader. Ridiculing her only expresses his own spitefulness and does not affect the President’s honour.” said Chief Adikarana Sanganayaka of Dhakshina Lanka, Ven. Athuraliye Indrarathna Thera.
