[26 September 2000]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge yesterday directed DIG Gampaha and Officer in Charge of Nittambuwa Police to launch a full scale investigation on the attack by a group of gangsters which took place yesterday morning at the UNP party office at Attanagalla.

People's Alliance Media Co-ordinating Unit press release stated that even though the incident took place at around 2.30 am yesterday, no complaint has been made to the Police Station, when the President called the Nittambuwa Police Station at 9.30 am.

The UNP Minister Parliament yesterday condemned the pre-dawn attack made by a group of terrorists to his residence "Araliya Uyana" at Attanagalla.

At a press conference held at the Opposition leader's Official residence in Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Colombo Mr. Bandaranaike stated that according to his opinion, incident has taken place without the knowledge of the President.

He also stated that he is amazed with this unlawful action which has taken place at a time when country is getting ready to commemorate the death anniversary of Prime Minister S W R D Bandaranaike at the same venue.  He was also surprised with how this group of terrorists accessed into the government declared high security zone.  He further stated that " I have already made a complaint to the Police and hope that necessary action would be taken against the persons involved, irrespective of their positions."

UNP Candidate Gaminie Gunaratne had stated that the thugs had removed several important documents including the list of UNP polling agents.

PA Poll Watch Co-ordinator Sripathi Sooriyaarachchi stressed the fact that PA does not need thuggery to win the Attanagalla Electorate, which it had won since independance.
