The Commissioner of Elections made a request to all employers both in government and private sector yesterday, to approve leave for their employees to cast their vote. Dayananda Dissanayake, the Commissioner of Elections, made this appeal with regard to the on coming parliamentary election scheduled to be held on 10 October from 7 a.m to 4 p.m. Furthermore he highlighted the fact that, according to section 122 of the Parliamentary Election Act all employees, including casual employees, are entitled for special paid leave and should be outside the employees normal leave entitlement. The Commissioner added “all employers both in the public and private sectors are kindly requested to comply with the legal requirement, and grant at least leave to the employees, to enable them to cast their votes at the forthcoming Parliamentary General Election”. He stated this on taking into account the complains made at the previous elections regarding the problem to obtain the leave required by the law.
