Sticker to avoid election malpractices
[26 September 2000]

The Commissioner of Election Dayananda Dissanayake permitted all political parties and Independent groups to introduce a sticker or official emblem of their choice on ballot boxes in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

This step was taken as a result of the requests made to the commissioner by several parties contesting for the election.

Political party representatives stated that this could avoid election malpractices. Furthermore, the sources revealed that the request to travel with the ballot boxes once the casting is over is yet to be considered by the Commissioner.

He expects to take further steps such as sending representatives of the Commissioner’s Department to all voting centres and deploying mobile Police and Army convoys, sources said. The special task force will also be deployed.

Commissioner has requested all parties to provide reports on centres where violence is speculated.
