EU Observer Mission visits Kandy

John Cushnahan, Head of the EU Observer Mission and Peter Cross, Media Adviser to the Mission visited Kandy on Saturday to observe a political rally states a press release issued by the EU Electoral Observer Mission to Sri Lanka.

When they arrived, they learned that the intended rally had been cancelled and that an incident involving a firearms attack on the vehicle of a local candidate and an assault on one of his supporters had taken place earlier, it further said.

“I have spoken to the police, to the candidate involved in the attack and to the victims of the assault and I am concerned as to how this matter is currently being handled. I take this matter very seriously and expect it to be investigated to a prosecution”, John Cushnahan said.

The Observer Mission is seeking an early meeting with the police authorities to convey the knowledge acquired by the mission.
