LTTE assassination  plots revealed
[27 September 2000]

The LTTE plot to assassinate mainstream political figures during election campaigning was revealed recently.

It was revealed following the recovery of large number of documents from a bag left by two terrorists who defied a halt command at an Army checkpoint in Kokuvil, Jaffna on September 18.

One cadre died in the confrontation with the army. And the other escaped. Later the victim was identified as ‘Sabeshan’ alias ‘Gulf India’ of the Intelligence Unit. The escaped, ‘Thanthan Master’ is another leading member of the same unit.

However, a list of names of the candidates contesting the forthcoming election, letters warning the candidates to withdraw their candidatures and also threatening Jaffna residents not to exercise their votes or co-operate with the security forces were among their possessions.

Furthermore, around 23 LTTE Tiger suicide bombers have infiltrated Colombo city. Their main targets are to bomb political rallies and functions.

Despite  police intelligence warning of the presence of the suicide bombers, politicians have taken little notice of it, sources reported.
