Troops in front lines facing Elephant Pass at Pallai repulsed a major attack by the LTTE yesterday evening, hours after troops brought Madduvil and Sarasalai under their control, military officials said. Pallai, situated about 38 kms from Jaffna came under heavy artillery and mortar assault which was later neutralized by the army. The LTTE attack was launched at 4.30 pm and army front lines at Nagarkovil in the Vadamarachchy and Pallai were attacked simultaneously with mortars and artillery. But troops succeeded in inflicting heavy losses on the enemy groups involved in the attack, Military Spokesman Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne said. He said that despite losing some bunkers, troops have managed to hold on to the area while successfully repulsing further attacks. In these assaults LTTE terrorists had used artillery and other support from Pooneryn and Elephant pass areas.
