The remarks made by the Dr. Rajitha Senaratne on President Chandrika Bandaranayke Kumaratunge’s injured eye at a UNP rally was condemned by several eminent persons in the country. The Executive Director of the Premadasa Centre and journalist Dayan Jayatilake said “ President Kumaratunge is a woman whose father was shot dead and the husband was murdered and who has been blinded in one eye due to a terrorist bomb. Dr. Rajitha Senaratne in speaking in such a manner about her injuries is not something that any patriotic Sri Lankan, particularly Sinhalese should do.” He further said that it is also not something any gentlemen would do. No one with an ounce of decency, culture, civilisation of humane values would speak in such a manner. Only a barbarian would do so. Dr. Jehan Perera said Dr. Rajitha’s recent comments on President Kumaratunga’s injured eye have been in very bad taste. Politicians should move from this kind of political culture. Rev. Kenneth Fernando said that Sri Lanka’s political scene is so disgusting today. “Therefore, I don’t want to make any comment”, he added.
