Sri Lankan rice gaining new markets
[27 September 2000]

With Sri Lankan rice gaining new markets worldwide, four more countries will import rice from Sri Lanka next year, Agriculture and Lands Minister, D M Jayaratne said.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has released Rs.100 million to upgrade the quality of rice produced in the country because our local rice has gained new markets worldwide.

“ We have to cultivate hybrid rice varieties to achieve better results in the future,” the Minister said, adding that the Agriculture Department has developed five new varieties of hybrid rice.

“ These varieties can increase the yield by 27 to 45 percent. Although we are self-sufficient in rice, we could achieve far better if we do away with the poor quality seed paddy varieties. The Government will increase the amount of quality seed paddy issued to farmers by 25 percent in the near future,” he said.
