Media groups accused for defamation of truth by PA
[27 September 2000]

A private television channel and a newspaper group have intentionally and spitefully defamed and is acting partial to the main opposition UNP, revealed the PA’s media co-ordination unit.

The Head of the Media Co-ordination Unit, ex-Navy Lieutenant Sripathi Sooriaarachchi warned these media units and threatened to take legal action against them.

The sources stated that in warning letters sent to the managing directors of the two groups, Sooriaarachchi charged the TV station for surreptitiously supporting the UNP and telecasting distorted news items through three popular programmes.

Furthermore, the media reports said that Sooriarachchi highlighted the fact that the TV station violated parliamentary election laws by publishing false stories and baseless allegations against the president and the government.

He also pointed out that some journalists in the media groups have acted highly UNP biased as they were paid by UNP funds.

Though the media groups were asked to take remedial measures immediately they denied the charges by admitting that they were independent and impartial, stated some sources.
