Olympic Games : Susanthika wins Bronze in 200m event

Sprinter Susanthika Jayasinghe won a bronze medal at Olympic Games in Sydney today, delivering Sri Lanka the second Olympic medal after 52 years.

It was Duncan White who won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in 1948 in the hurdles event in London.

 

Marion Jones of USA won the gold medal clocking 21.84. Pauline Davis of Bahamas won the silver medal clocking 22.27 while Susanthika clocked 22.28 winning the bronze medal.

Jayasinghe became the first in the semi finals today, just a few hours before the finals clocking 22.45.

Shortly after her victory, President Kumaratunga sent a congratulation message over the Rupavahini television, wishing Susanthika of her victory that made Lanka proud.
