[28 September 2000]

The government seeks advice from US government specialists on ways of handling media with regard to the ongoing military operations and other related matters, sources reported.

A four-member group of senior Public Affairs Officers of the US National Guard met approximately 20 armed forces, police and defence ministry officials involved in print and electronic media.

"Our goal was to increase the expertise of the Sri Lankan officials handling public affairs" stated the US Embassy spokesman Steve Holgate regarding the two-day workshop in Colombo.

The sources said that the ongoing censorship was also discussed extensively and the two sides exchanged views on a number of other relevent key issues.

Furthermore, under the existing Extended Relations Programme[ERP], the US Pacific Command conduct various programmes, including combat training for Sri Lankan armed forces within the island and abroad, sources said.

Meanwhile, the security forces executed their fourth major offensive in the Jaffna peninsula. They secured Madduvil [North] and Sarasalai [West] in Tennamarachchi.

The LTTE launched a major attack on government positions at Pallai Kilaly. However the armed forces were able to consolidate their frontline positions.
