Jaffna people fear LTTE poll rigging at election
[28 September 2000]

People in Jaffna expressed fears of election rigging in Jaffna after news of opening polling booths in LTTE areas since such a decision would enable the LTTE to influence the overall results in the peninsula to their advantage, news reports revealed today.

According to northern reports, Jaffna residents and Tamil political parties are opposing the plan to establish eight polling centres in terrorist areas in the peninsula that might lead to vote rigging at the General Election.

Jaffna Government Agent R.Shanmuganathan have earlier told visiting journalists that he would make necessary arrangements to open polling booths in LTTE areas.

"These polling centres will benefit people in the uncleared areas who are keen to vote on October 10," the GA has said.

Despite GA's decision, voters and party representatives in Jaffna are expressing concern, whether this might allow the LTTE to rig the poll as they do not let the people to take a decision on their own.

The terrorists have already announced that they are seeking a change of Government at this election.

According to reports published in the media the Tigers were stated as tacitly supporting the UNP campaign in several areas of the North-East.

Police investigation have also revealed that a similar attempt has been made to open polling booths in uncleared areas and defraud the election on August 13, 1994 during the D.B.Wijetunga administration, published reports reveal.
