Police Headquarters to meet Hindu priests
[29 September 2000]

Police Headquarters are currently forced to conduct regular operations in Colombo following intelligence reports that LTTE suicide cadres are planning to seek refuge in Hindu temples in Colombo.

It is now confirmed that the LTTE suicide cadre who attempted to assassinate President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge in December last year was lodged in a Hindu temple.

The wife of the Chief Priest of the Hindu temple who provided accommodation to the LTTE suicide bomber has been questioned, according to sources.

Amidst threats of interrupting a peaceful election on October 10 LTTE sources revealed they have sent a mission of 23 suicide bombers to Colombo.

Recently, an LTTE suicide bomber exploded himself near the Eye Hospital in Colombo killing seven including a Police officer and a nurse.

Meanwhile Deputy Inspector General Bodhi Liyanage, in charge of security said that the headquarters had decided to meet Hindu priests and trustees.

“We want to stress the need to prevent LTTE infiltrators from securing refuge at Hindu temples”, Liyanage further said.

Deputy Inspector General noted that there had been a number of detections at Hindu temples in the past few years.

“We have recovered explosive-packed jackets, grenades, explosives and guns during raids”; he said adding that the police compelled to conduct regular operations as part of the ongoing efforts to avert LTTE attack in Colombo and suburbs.

However, Ceylon Workers Congress ex-MP Ramiah Yogarajan has written to  President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge requesting her to prevent the police from summoning Hindu priests and trustees.
