Govt to pay interim allowance for public servants, pensioners from Oct 1
[02 October 2000]

Over 800,000 public servants and 400,000 Government pensioners will receive a monthly interim allowance, from October 1, which the Government has decided to pay pending the implementation of the recommendations of the sitting Salaries Commission and the Pensions Committee.

According to the Finance and Planning Ministry, those eligible will receive the enhanced allowance with effect from October 1 announcement.

The allowance will entail an estimated additional expenditure of Rs. 1,000 million.

The Government recently decided to pay public servants drawing a salary less than Rs. 12,000 a month, a monthly allowance of Rs. 1,000 (inclusive of Rs. 600 already being paid) or 10 per cent of their salary whichever is more and Government pensioners Rs. 500 (inclusive of Rs. 300 currently being paid) or 10 per cent of their pension whichever is more as an interim measure.

The Government has also increased the interim allowance now being paid to daily-paid Government servants by Rs. 47.62 a day subject to a maximum of 21 days a month.

This is the first time pensioners have received a 10 per cent increase along with public servants.

Public servants will get this increase with their October pay and pensioners with their pension due to be paid on October 5.

The Government proposes to implement the recommendations to be made by the sitting Salaries Commission and the Pensions Committee expeditiously. Those recommendations are expected to offer a series of relief measures to public servants and pensioners, the Ministry said.
