Private electronic media gains permission to give full coverage of the election results
[02 October 2000]

Last Saturday, the Commissioner of Election, Dayananda Dissanayake allowed the private media to telecast and broadcast the official results of the General Election.

This decision was taken following a meeting between the Commissioner and the heads of private media organisations.

So far the government controlled Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation held the sole authority to telecast official results of an election.

Sources said that two members from each media institution are permitted to enter Election Commissioner’s department.

Furthermore the University of Colombo will provide high-tech assistance to release the results to the public, stated the Commissioner of Elections.
