Thai Sangaraja extends helping hand to Sri Lanka to fight terrorism
[02 October 2000]

Guardians of the nation, the Buddhist Sanga have come forward to safeguard the nation against the violent deeds of the LTTE organisation, which is created to kill and be killed.

The history of the LTTE is painted with blood with killings of thousands of innocent civilians including 31 Buddhist Sangas in Aranthalawa a few years ago.

A Buddhist delegation from Sri Lanka, which arrived in Bangkok on September 24, urged the Maha Sanga of Thailand to co-operate with Sri Lankan Buddhists to protect the Buddha Sasana from LTTE threat.

The Most Venerable Sangaraja of Thailand assured the delegation of his fullest co-operation to Sri Lanka to solve the present ethnic crisis and to restore the peace in the country.

The Sangaraja appreciated the vital role played by Sri Lanka in preserving the Theravada Buddhist tradition in its pristine purity. He expressed grave concern that if the current onslaught is not arrested immediately, what is at stake is not only Buddhism, but also an ancient and unique civilisation founded on the basic tenets of Buddhism.

The Thai Sanga were also informed that the LTTE had succeeded in driving away Buddhist villagers from their homes in the North and East

The long-standing historical and religious relations between the two countries were recalled in the course of the conversation.

Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos are the leading Theravada countries in the world. They are committed to protecting and promoting a historic, sacred and valuable tradition.

Members of the delegation take the view that these countries should co-operate to protect one another from internal and external forces that are now threatening them.
