Muttur bomb blast : LTTE targets another candidate to stop minorities from entering parliament
[03 October 2000]

PA candidate in Trincomalee district Mr. M. Baithulla, representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress was killed when an LTTE suicide bomber exploded himself killing 23 other people at a election rally in Muttur, Trincomalee yesterday evening, in a bid to stop minorities entering the parliament.

More than 45 persons were injured from the blast and most of then were in a serious condition at the Trincomalee hospital.

Mr. Baithulla was about to leave the premises, in front of the Muttur Cultural Centre where he had addressed the election rally, in a convoy of Tri-shaws around 7.45 pm, when the bomb exploded.

The suicide bomber is believed to have come in a Tri-shaw.

The Navy and police strengthened the security around the place where the bomb exploded and according to a top naval officer at China Bay the place is accessible only by ferry.

"We have sent as many as sailors as possible for the rescue mission," he said.

Mr. Baithulla is the third candidate to be killed since parliament was dissolved on August 18 ahead of the General Election in October 10.

He had been a former police officer of the Counter Subversive Unit of the police.

National Unity Alliance National Organiser Asitha Perera yesterday condemned the brutal attack of the LTTE that also killed innocent civlians.

Pointing out to the assassination attempts on Deputy Minister Hizbulla, Mr. Perera further said that the LTTE is trying to prevent minorities from entering the parliament.

"It is clear that the LTTE has no regard for the other minorities as well as for their own people. We knew from the start even when they invited the Muslims to join them that they were living a lie to show a false a image to the rest of the world," government sources said.

The LTTE is desperately trying to eliminate whoever the candidates in the north and east in their attempt to deprive the people from choosing a party from their own choice, in a democratic way.

"The LTTE knows now what the people want. That the people are frustrated and are aching to put a stop to end the war. They are afraid to allow the people to vote," charged political observers.

"Even internationally, people have begun to wonder the massacres of the LTTE that has targeted political leaders like, late president R. Premadasa to innocent Tamil, Muslim and Sinhalese people in the north, east and south," they said.
