On October 2 in the evening at Muttur, a suicide bomber trapped with explosives riding a bicycle rode into a three-wheeler carrying M L Baithullah, Ex Police Officer and PA Trincomalee district candidate, causing a massive explosion. Baithullah, one Police sub inspector and 20 civilians were killed and another 48 others including six Police personnel were injured due to the blast. Again, on October 2 around 4 pm at Kalawanchikudi, a bicycle bomb planted by the terrorists was triggered off targeting Deputy Posts and Telecommunications Minister M L A M Hisbullah. The bomb exploded after Hisbullah passed the spot on the Batticaloa-Kalmunai main road injuring 3 Police officers who were travelling in a police jeep behind Hisbullah’s vehicle. A little boy was killed and his father was injured while the police jeep belonging to Kalawanchikudi Police was also damaged due to the explosion. On October 1 around 7.10 pm terrorists attacked with mortars and artillery troops manning defences in Nagarkovil, Eluthumaduval and Kilaly areas. However, troops retaliated with artillery neutralising the terrorist fire. Two soldiers were killed and 10 were injured due to terrorist fire, the Special media Information Centre said. On October 2 in Puttur, troops operating in the area recovered 85 anti-personnel mines abandoned by the terrorists. In a separate incident troops on a clearing operation in Sarasalai South recovered a T56 weapon on the same day. 20 lorry loads to Mullaitivu and three lorry loads to Mannar were dispatched on October 2 with food and other essential items. Meanwhile seven-lorry loads of fertilizer too were sent to Mannar on the same day. Further, 12 patients and four helpers reported to Vavuniya Hospital on the same day from uncleared areas for medical treatment.
