Army concentrating on massive thrust in Jaffna - Gen. Ratwatte
[04 October 2000]

Government plans to recapture most of Jaffna before October 15, before heavy monsoonal rains, said Acting Defence Minister General Anuruddha Ratwatte yesterday.

Addressing a news conference in Colombo, he said that the terrorists had used the lull in the fighting during the past three months to regroup and retrain.

The minister also said that the army is also fully equipped and trained and was confident of victory in areas such as Chavakachcheri, Columbuthurai, Ariyali and Kaithadi.

He said that the aim of launching the operation was to win back the lands and ensure a better environment to conduct free and fair election as well as to stop the LTTE from trying to hamper the elections in the peninsula.

Gen. Ratwatte denied allegations that the on going military offensive was politically motivated, before the General Elections.

"It's actually the other way around. The LTTE is conducting a campaign against us at this juncture," he said.

He also said that Tigers attempt to disrupt civilians by firing mortars on populated areas in Thenmarachchi in the peninsula have also been thwarted.
