A delegation from the Fisheries Ministry along with some fisher folk would leave for New Delhi soon to bring 52 fishermen in Indian custody for more than a year, official sources revealed. Fisheries Assistant Director H. V. C. Fernando said that Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi has informed that the Indian central government has requested the Kerala Provincial government to release the fishermen immediately. According to the sources the fishermen in custody are from Negombo, Marawila and Beruwala and had been arrested by the Indian coast guards in Kerala. It has also been informed that 12 skippers along with their boats would be released in due course and that 75 other fishermen who are held in Tamil Nadu and Andaman Islands are yet to be released. Last month, the Minister of Cultural Affairs Lakshman Jayakody and Fisheries Director General P. K. Nagodawithana visited the Indian Fisheries Minister Nitish Kumar to request the immediate release of more then 100 fishermen in Indian custody.
