LTTE suicide bombing at PA rally causes death to ten
[06 October 2000]

A suicide bomber exploded himself yesterday at an election rally in Northern Sri Lanka. According to sources 10 innocent civilians were killed and 40 others injured in the explosion.

The incident took place in the town of Madawachchiya, approximately 230 Km North of the capital Colombo. The sources revealed that the attack was aimed at a leading member of the ruling Peoples Alliance, Deputy Health and Indigenous Medicine minister Tissa Karaliyadde.

The Deputy Minister escaped unhurt.

The bomb exploded when a police constable tried to body check suicide bomber.

A similar incident occurred in Muttur, Eastern part of Sri Lanka, which caused death for 26 persons, including National Unity Alliance Batticaloa District candidate M.Baithullah.

LTTE repeatedly attacked the ruling party election campaigns but surprisingly none of the rallies of the main opposition, United National Party [UNP] was targeted.

According to intelligence sources 23 suicide bombers have infiltrated the capital city, Colombo.
