Various sections of the society have expressed disgust and shock on the plan drawn by UNP-LTTE agreement to restrict the Security Forces to barracks and to set up a Tiger-led interim council in the North-East. Pollonaruwa Adhikarana Sangha Nayaka, Ven. Kumbukkadawala Sri DheeranandaThera stated, “All Sri Lankans would oppose any move by the UNP to obtain LTTE assistance to come to power.” He further said, “It is a shame that UNP had to seek the assistance of such an organisation to succeed in their ambitions and UNP must stop this alliance even at this stage.” Convenor of the Hela Mithrayo Organisation called this a “treacherous move” and said UNP campaigning in LTTE dominated areas clearly depicts their alliance with LTTE. Former MP Halim Ishak said: “UNP is carrying a campaign against President’s peace efforts and Eelam had found it as the easy way to succeed in their dream.” D N Senaratne, a retired Public Servant stated, “UNP-LTTE agreement have many shocking chapters which threatens the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. ” Deputy Secretary of the Federation of Trade Unions of Sri Lanka, H A Wilbert said, “The agreement contains the concessions allegedly granted by the UNP to the LTTE. These undermine the victories achieved by our valiant Security Forces.”
