Sihala Urumaya in Jaffna
[06 October 2000]

Sihala Urumaya candidates visited Jaffna on September 27 and spoke about the situation there at a press conference at their party office yesterday.

National Orgainser of the Sihala Urumaya said that they would not at any point negotiate with the LTTE.

He accused the PA and the UNP of trying to enter into agreements with the LTTE.

He also said that the UNP is working hand in hand with the LTTE.

"They have promised to evacuate the army from these areas in their manifesto and they have proposed an interim council for the LTTE," Mr. Ranawaka said.

Tharanga Wagasenavi contesting for the Jaffna district under the Sihala Urumaya banner said that the UNP is roaming free in the city and seemed to be even more powerful than the EPDP.

"Even the EPDP is going around the city heavily armed because the LTTE pistol gang is very strong there, but UNPers walk around Jaffna unarmed and only their posters are seen in the city," he said pointing out that it is obvious that UNP has the support of the LTTE.

"You cannot expect a free and fair election in Jaffna, as there are no democratic election campaigns there except for Sihala Urumaya," he said.
