Army repulse LTTE offensive on general elections
[09 October 2000]

The Army has repulsed the latest phase in LTTE offensive called "Unceasing Waves" aimed at defeating the security forces prior to Tuesday’s general election, military sources revealed.

The LTTE had been planning to repeat what they did in the Wanni ahead of the last presidential election in December, 1999.Further, the clandestine Voice of Tigers on September 26 revealed the launch of the fourth phase of "Unceasing Waves" just a few hours after the LTTE renewed major offensive operations against the security forces in Jaffna.

But security forces with the support of the Airforce, have successfully repulsed a series of attacks by the LTTE in Kilali-Muhamalai and Nagarkovil.

The LTTE used artillery during the initial stages of the offensive targeting on key security forces positions including Palaly security forces complex.

The threat on Palaly both from long range artillery and a small group of commando infiltrators disrupted flights to Palaly. But, flights were later resumed only to be cancelled again on Friday due to bad weather, military sources said.

on Thursday [Oct. 4], the LTTE made an abortive attempt to break the Nagarkovil defences in a four-hour battle. Approximately 35 terrorists including two top male and female commanders were killed during the heavy fighting. Several dozens of cadres had been wounded in heavy artillery and air strikes that also destroyed a field gun, a 130 mm Chinese built artillery piece deployed at Pooneryn. Another field gun, believed to be a 122 mm artillery weapon was also destroyed a few days before, the military said.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence [CMEV] and the PAFFREL engaged in monitoring the general election blamed the LTTE for their attacks on populated areas that raised the number of people killed in polls related violence to over 50.

Police headquarters and polls monitors agreed that the LTTE had been responsible for at least 45 killings in direct attacks on the PA.

Military officials said that terrorists had also killed at least five more civilians in the Jaffna peninsula in indiscriminate artillery and mortar attacks aimed at disrupting the general election. "Thousands have been displaced," a senior military official said yesterday pointing out that the LTTE’s actions has threatened the Tuesday’s poll.

The LTTE, he pointed out wanted to sabotage the election and ensure a low poll to show the international community that the people have no faith in this system. He said that the international community that has sent observers here must take note of the LTTE’s indiscriminate attacks aimed at disrupting the election and should take appropriate action to deal with the organisation.
