Tiger suspects taken into custody before final PA rally
[09 October 2000]

Three LTTE suspects were taken into custody by the Horana police just hours before holding the final PA rally at the Horana Stadium presided over by Prime Minister, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.

The Tiger suspects who were residents of Hatton, Gampola and Punduluoya had fifteen feet of fuse wire, a small quantity of explosives and two sticks of dynamite hidden inside a cardboard box containing tins of sardine at a newly opened grocery shop at Horana Town.

Police on tip-off on Saturday morning raided the shop and under questioning the suspects told police that they purchased the box of sardines on Friday evening from Pettah and had not opened the box after purchasing it.

The suspects were produced before the Horana Magistrate and remanded till October 16.

With LTTE threats of disrupting peace at the October 10 General Election, police are on the alert of Tiger suspects in and around Colombo city.
