The British High Commissioner, Miss Linda Duffield in a condolence message on the death of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike said, "I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of the former Prime Minister, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, who passed away earlier this morning. Britain had a great respect for Mrs. Bandaranaike as the world's first woman Prime Minister and Sri Lanka's longest serving Prime Minister. She made an important contribution to Sri Lanka's post-independence development and will be remembered for the influential role she played on the international scene. On behalf of the British Government I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, to all the members of Mrs. Bandaranaike's family and to the people of Sri Lanka at this sad time."
