President Chandrika Bandranaike Kumaratunge invited the People’s Alliance to form the new government, the Information Department said in a press release last night. The President’s decision follows a lengthy meeting with the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) leader Douglas Devananda and the leaders of the National Unity Alliance (NUA) and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) regarding their support last evening. Since PA with 107 seats (46%) is the single largest party in the 225-member parliament, I invited them to form the next government, the President said in an interview with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corperation yesterday. Accordingly, Ratnasiri Wickramanayake at 67 is scheduled to take oath as the Prime Minister of the new government today. The main opposition, the United National Party had won 89 seats with 12 seats from the National List. In 1994 General election the party managed to obtained 94 seats in total. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramauna with the third highest number of votes in the 11th parliament has 10 seats- eight on national basis and two from the National List. The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) has won five seats. The National Unity Alliance (NUA) will have four members of parliament. The Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) has won four seats, Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) three, Sihala Urumaya one, All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) one, and the Independent Group 2 (Digamadulla) one. Thus 196 members were directly elected in the General Election while the respective parties from their National Lists will select 29 other members. Meanwhile the Election Commissioner, taking into considering some incidents reported from various areas, decided to annul the polls of 22 polling stations. ALL ISLAND RESULTCOMPOSITION OF PARLIAMENT
