Dispute over national list seat in Sihala Urumaya

Party members of the Sihala Urumaya, which obtained one national list seat at the October 10 General Election are fighting over the hierarchy of the Party and who will be appointed for its national list seat, sources said.

The SU initially wanted to appoint veteran lawyer S L Gunasekera for its national list seat, but the Champika Ranawaka faction has opposed this move, party sources said.

The Central Committee of the Party has nominated the name of S L Gunasekera. “ If anyone doesn’t cut my neck, I will represent the Sihala Urumaya in Parliament”, he said.

This dispute went beyond the control of the party leaders where Ranawaka’s supporters have threatened Prof. A V De S Indraratne who proposed that Gunasekera be nominated.
