Tigers attempt attack on Kataragama telecom
[17 October 2000]

A toy seller recently claimed that the LTTE had given him a toy bat containing a bomb to be placed at the telecom tower in Kataragama, a city that is around 292 km from Colombo.

The dealer had allegedly gone to Kalmunai, in the northern part of the country, to meet another trader when they had been captured by the LTTE. Later he had been told that his friend would be released only if he planted a toy bat containing a bomb at the telecom tower in Kataragama.

However, not adhering to their plans, the dealer had taken the toy bat to the Kataragama Police and reported the incident.
