Eight women to enter parliament

Out of 117 women candidates who contested at the general elections last week, eight have succeeded in the bid to enter Parliament.

Fourteen women candidates came from the PA followed by eight from the UNP.

JVP and Independent groups together fielded 94 candidates. However, the Liberal Party had the highest number of women nominees on their National List.

Out of the 8 women who won seats in Parliament, five are new comers.

They are Feiral Ashraff (Digamadulla, NUA), Surangani Ellawela (Ratnapura, PA), Soma Kumari Tennakoon (Kurunegala, PA), Shriyani Fernando (Puttalam, PA) and Chandrani Bandara (Anuradhapuira, UNP).

The other three are, former minister Sumedha G. Jayasena, former deputy minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and former Kurunegala district UNP MP Amara Piyaseeli.

Meanwhile, the JVP has appointed Anjan Umma from the National List.
