NUA pledges unconditional support for President
[18 October 2000]

National Unity Alliance Co-leader Ferial Ashraff yesterday pledged unconditional support for the People’s Alliance after President Kumaratunge broke protocol and came to her Stanmore Crescent residence for a two-hour meeting.

The President has stated at the meeting with Ms. Ashraff-widow of the late SLMC founder leader M H M Ashraff, the undue demands made by them would place her at a difficult juncture.  Her Excellency has also stated that she was forming a broad coalition government with the support of EPDP, MEP and alternative groups from the UNP.

A meeting was summoned by Ms. Feriel Ashraff consisting of NUA parliamentary Groups.  However, General Secretary Rauff Hakeem, Digamadulla member M Attaulah and National list member Rasheed Segu Dawood were among the notable absentees. Digamadulla members U L M Mohideen and Wimalaweera Dissanayake.  Batticaloa member Mohideen Abdul Cader and national list members U L M Haneefa and Rizzwi Sinnalebbe along with Wanni district member A K N Mashoor were present at the meeting with Mrs. Ashraff indicating a division within the party.

The NUA leadership has explained the NUA MPs of the President’s clear understanding of the problems faced by the Muslim Community living in the North East province.  The NUA has no intention to pressurise the PA on the selection of the Ministers except urging the government to bring peace to the country.
