PA sources confirmed last night that PA has agreed to the appointment of Anura Bandaranaike as the new Speaker for the eleventh parliament. Sources confirmed today that Senior Parliamentarian Anura Bandaranaike will be proposed as the new speaker by the UNP and it is expected that the Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayake will second the proposal. This move to back UNPer as a speaker will ultimately nourish the relationship of the two sides and it could act as a base for future consultation for an understanding to reach agreements on national issues. Mr. Anura Bandaranaike has always been a strong supporter in forming a national government in the past, as he believed it could definitely resolve the national problems that have brought a great destruction and loss to the country. It is also believed by sources that this proposition will be a landmark in the political history of Sri Lanka as this is the first time in parliament’s history an opposition member is electing as the speaker for the parliament. The UNP parliamentary group inaugural meeting that was held yesterday unanimously proposed the name of Mr. Anura Bandaranaike as the Speaker in the eleventh Parliament. The appointment of the Chief Whip and the Chief Opposition Whip will be made today.
