The possibility of the People’s Alliance (PA) and the United National Party (UNP) coming together to form a national government in the near future are afoot, sources revealed. UNP’s Anura Bandaranaike will be proposed as the new Speaker in the eleventh Parliament by the UNP and sources confirm that Prime Minister, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake will second the proposal. This move to back a UNPer as Speaker by the PA is seen as a step forward in the two parties coming together as a base for future consultations and in reaching understanding for future issues. “ Mr. Bandaranaike has been an ardent supporter of the move for a national government in the past which he said could resolve national problems that brought destruction to the country at economic and social levels,” local newspapers reported.
