Anura creates  history in the Parliament

Gampaha district United national Party MP, Anura Bandaranaike was unanimously elected Speaker of the 11th Parliament yesterday.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe jointly proposed his name. John Amaratunge of the UNP seconded the proposal.

Assuming his new office, Anura Bandaranaike pledged to uphold parliamentary traditions and democratic norms.

He reserved a special word of thanks for President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge and the Peoples Alliance for affording him this opportunity and to his party.

Born in 1947, Anura Bandaranaike is the only son of two Prime Ministers-S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike and Sirimavo Bandaranaike. He is the younger brother of President Chnadrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge.

He elected to the Parliament at the age of 28 from Nuwara Eliya – Maskeliya seat. He was the Opposition Leader in 1983 when the then UNP government removed the civic rights of his mother Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

Later he resigned from SLFP and crossed over to the UNP. Anura was appointed Minister of Higher Education in 1993.

Anura contested the October General Election from the Gampaha district.

Meanwhile the posts of Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chairman of Committees went to government nominees. Major General Sarath Munasinghe, MP for Kurunegala district was elected Deputy Speaker unanimously.

The post of Deputy Chairman of Committees went to Lalith Dissanayake, PA MP for Kegalle district.
