Kadirgamar urges Norwegian government to halt LTTE fund raising activities
[19 October 2000]

The Norwegian government is considering signing the UN Convention against the Financing of Terrorism, Norwegian Foreign Minister Thorbjorn Jagland told Lankan Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar on Tuesday.

Minister Kadirgamar urged the Norwegian government to take measures to halt the fund raising activities of LTTE front organisations in Norway, a Foreign Ministry Press release said yesterday.

According to the release such illegal fund raising was perpetuating the conscription of child soldiers by the LTTE and the Minister urged Norway to take a positive stand on this important humanitarian issue.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in her message pointed out that Norway’s role in the peace process of Sri Lanka is an important facet in the growing relationship between the two countries and that she looked forward to the continuing engagement by the Government of Norway in the peace process.
